Estimating Bit Error Rates and Noise Margins via Simulation
نویسنده
چکیده
Monte Carlo simulations, with their inherent uncertainty, are often used to determine the bit error rate of digital communication systems operating in the presence of noise. To assess the noise margin in a system operating with an acceptable bit error rate, this noisy functional relationship must be inverted. We describe a novel technique with improved speed and comparable accuracy for estimating the minimum Eb/N0, given the acceptable bit error rate, which can be used with almost any Monte Carlo simulator. This technique has been used to speed up simulation runs by a factor of more than 20 while designing a commercial RF chip. We show that computing the grand average of multiple runs to estimate the bit error rate, when the underlying error process is Poisson, is the best one can do in the absence of any other information. Lastly, we mention areas for future investigation.

High-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node
In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...
متن کاملProbabilistic modeling of noise transfer characteristics in digital circuits
Device scaling, the driving force of CMOS technology, led to continuous decrease in the energy level representing logic states. The resulting small noise margins in combination with increasing problems regarding the supply voltage stability and process variability creates a design conflict between efficiency and reliability. This conflict is expected to rise more in future technologies. Current...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis Of Mono-bit Digital Instantaneous Frequency Measurement (Difm) Device
Instantaneous Frequency Measurement (IFM) devices are the essential parts of anyESM, ELINT, and RWR receiver. Analog IFMs have been used for several decades. However, thesedevices are bulky, complex and expensive. Nowadays, there is a great interest in developing a wideband, high dynamic range, and accurate Digital IFMs. One Digital IFM that has suitably reached allthese requirements is mono-bi...
متن کاملMultistage multiuser detection for FHMA
A multistage multiuser detector (MMD) is presented for frequency hopping/code division multiple access (FH/CDMA.) The MMD reduces the bit error rate over the conventional detector by exploiting prior knowledge of the addresses and energies of the users. This detector is a conservative multiuser detector which is robust to unknown users and is only linear in complexity in the number of users. Th...
متن کاملTransfer Function Bounds on the Performance of Turbo Codes
In this article, we apply transfer function bounding techniques to obtain upper bounds on the bit-error rate for maximum-likelihood decoding of turbo codes constructed with random permutations. These techniques are applied to two turbo codes with constraint length 3 and later extended to other codes. The performance predicted by these bounds is compared with simulation results. The bounds are u...
